Southern California desert groundwater dirtier than most (Desert Sun)

January 9, 2013 – A new water quality study from the U.S. Geological Survey released Wednesday found arsenic, boron and other inorganic elements in 42 percent of the Coachella Valley’s aquifers.The valley figures were part of larger study conducted between 2006 and 2008, showing higher levels of eight naturally occurring elements in aquifers across the Southern California desert compared to the rest of the state. Coachella Valley Water District (Aa3 / 189810J21) officials said the agency was aware of the study but had not directly participated in it. Spokeswoman Heather Engel added that the findings were no surprise.
