California: College of the Desert prepared to pay back millions, restore trust (Desert Sun)

January 6, 2013 – College of the Desert officials will begin 2013 by working out a repayment plan for $5.3 million the community college owes the state for false financial reporting. It’s the latest step as the college works to deal with the aftermath of a year filled with management issues and other miscues that have been a blow to the Coachella Valley’s largest higher education institution and a hit to a budget already strained by years of state funding cuts. Officials from College of the Desert will meet with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office on Friday to discuss how the college will repay the $5.3 million that it improperly received by overstating how many students were served over the past several years.
