Bans and Rules Muddy Prospects for Gas Drilling (NY Times)

January 4, 2013 – By late February, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat, is expected to make a decision on whether hydraulic fracturing, a controversial natural gas drilling process that is already under way from Pennsylvania to Texas to North Dakota, will be allowed in New York. Any decision will be made against a backdrop of ferocious opposition from environmental groups, which say the drilling process — also known as fracking — poses too high a risk of groundwater contamination, air pollution and other environmental problems.
