Sandy aftermath: Helping small New Jersey towns heal giant wounds (Star Ledger)

December 23, 2012 – From Union Beach to Keansburg to the coastal communities of Middletown, men and women who once collected sewer taxes are now filling out demolition checklists and, when there’s nothing left to do but console, comforting those for whom it’s all become just too much. Over the past four weeks, The Star-Ledger interviewed dozens of these municipal workers all along the Bayshore — clerks, administrators, managers and assessors. Since the hurricane, many of them have been performing jobs for which they never trained, shouldering responsibilities they never imagined.
