Municipal power companies outperformed larger utilities during Hurricane Sandy (NJ . com)

December 15, 2012 – Borough administrator James Lampmann said Butler Power & Light as well as other smaller municipal utilities like Madison Electric Utility outperformed larger power companies such as Jersey Central Power & Light during Hurricane Sandy due in part to comprehensive training and employee familiarity with the municipal power grid. Butler Power & Light, which serves about 12,000 customers in Butler, Bloomingdale, Kinnelon and parts of Riverdale and West Milford, restored 75 percent of its power grid in 48 hours, Lampmann said. The utility purchases power from Constellation Energy, but that energy is delivered to the Butler substations via a transmission line owned and operated by Jersey Central Power & Light, Lampmann said.
